From someone who’s been a diehard fan of everything Gervais has done for a couple of decades, Armageddon feels like a piece of work unworthy of its creator’s great talents.

Gervais is trapped between two ill-fitting styles, and outclassed in both directions.

The only truly shocking thing about Armageddon is how unfunny it all is. The man who popularised cringe comedy with the original version of The Office is now unironically cringe-inducing.

Essentially a cover version of his greatest hits, the hourlong special finds the comedian taking particular delight in essentially committing an act of onstage arson.
