Storyline

Brennan Huff and Dale Doback might be grown men. But that doesn't stop them from living at home and turning into jealous, competitive stepbrothers when their single parents marry. Brennan's constant competition with Dale strains his mom's marriage to Dale's dad, leaving everyone to wonder whether they'll ever see eye to eye.

Critics consensus

“Step Brothers indulges in a cheerfully relentless immaturity that will quickly turn off viewers unamused by Ferrell and Reilly -- and delight those who find their antics hilarious.”

It isn't even the funniest movie I've seen this year. But it sure made me laugh.

The potentially gooey conclusion is leavened with cynical irreverence.

The shouty variety of manchild comedy that Ferrell has cribbed from Jerry Lewis divides movie fans intensely. Here's the one we should put in the time capsule.

This isn’t the type of movie that possesses much resonance, save for the few exceptionally funny moments hidden amid the general absurdity.
