The pulse of the film is the family’s dynamic, but it remains fairly unfrayed as the years pass. Again and again, the script takes a turn away from any sustained tension.

Even if Lee and Moura work overtime to sell the terrifying scenario these parents find themselves in, ridiculous lines and worse decision-making takes us out of the moment.

There’s nothing to tether yourself to, no real narrative anchor point that’s anything more than a discombobulated message of the power of family.

Though consensus around the film is unlikely to change, (especially since it doesn’t quite land its ending) it’s a tense and emotionally engaging film that’s well worth its runtime.
