Rose of Nevada is so uniquely its own thing, I strain for any comparison at all. Jenkin works the aforementioned technical restraints of his chosen vintage technology to extraordinary effect.

I’m lackadaisical about wherever the story intended to leave me, and unsure of its ruminations on whether the needs of the many outweigh those of the few. But I admire the way “Rose of Nevada” tells its story. Sometimes, my admiration is enough.

The result is a film that is haunting and singular – a furnace-blast of the past reshaped and refashioned for our modern times. All aboard.

Mark Jenkin crafts a haunting, beautifully textured ghost story where memory, identity, and time collide. Its stunning 16mm photography creates an unforgettable atmosphere, even if the film’s ambiguity sometimes leaves its ideas underdeveloped.
