Storyline

At a national park in Kenya, English game warden George Adamson and his wife, Joy, care for three orphaned lion cubs. After the two larger lions are shipped off to a zoo in the Netherlands, the smallest of the three, Elsa, stays with the couple. When Elsa is blamed for causing an elephant stampede in the nearby village, head warden John Kendall demands the young lion either be trained to survive in the wilds of the Serengeti or be sent to a zoo.

Gerald L. C. Copley has done a first rate adaptation of the true story of Joy Adamson, who with hubby George involuntarily domesticated several pet lions.

Without minimizing the facts of animal life or overly sentimentalizing them, this film casts an enchantment that is just about irresistible.

When it comes to animal movies, I'm as big a fool as anybody, and I stupidly hoped for a lot. The letdown was almost immediate: unfortunately for Born Free, the art of the film was not born yesterday.

...a warm, melancholy tearjerker both immediate in its emotion and timeless in its theme.
