Masterfully constructed and yet eventually rather wearisome.

Like Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Ferrara collapses history within his iconographic mise-en-scene, stressing the burden of tradition his characters have placed on their shoulders.

One wonders what this cast could have done had they been given some real material to work with.

Love the premise and dug the first 50-minutes or so but really fell off the rest of the way, especially the final 20 minutes. Liked the cast with Walken at his Walkeny best, Dafoe and Argento but the story just didn't come together that well. I know the name Abel Ferrara but this is the first film I've seen of his. That said, I loved his style. Of course, probably not the best film to watch late at night. **2.0/5**
