Smartly cast, deftly directed and elaborately mounted.

March is strangely listless in an aggravating role. Ruth Hussey and Marjorie Main stand out in a competent cast which mostly plays at being Long Island hedonists. Perhaps they even do too good a job in setting a vapid and inconsequential tone.

This film, amusing in parts, is a not too happy mixture of satire and sentiment.

One of George Cukor's worst films due to lack of sympathetic charcater, made worse by Joan Crawford's lackluster performance; MGM queen Norma Shearer turned down the role because she didn't want to play a mature woman with children!
