Storyline

A sadder than sad story about a fun-loving optimist whose interest in comedy performance is despised by both his family and his wealthy future in-laws, Li’s tragic-comedy follows the 50-year-old father (Bao) as he maintains a dignified façade after losing his long-held accounting job in an occupied Tianjin in the 1940s.

In her first starring role, the 15-year-old Young is enchantingly natural. But it's Chaney's command of mime—whether slapsticking with Siegel or suppressing his bruised emotions—that makes this hoary and dated melodrama so moving.

Screen actors who impersonate clowns are usually such bum comedians... Tito, the hero of Laugh, Clown, Laugh, is another of those movie mountebanks who are convincingly tragic but never in the least bit funny.

The fifteen-year-old Loretta Young (only 14 at the time of shooting) is 45-year-old Lon Chaney's leading lady.
