Storyline

The Road Forward is an electrifying musical documentary that connects a pivotal moment in Canada’s civil rights history—the beginnings of Indian Nationalism in the 1930s—with the powerful momentum of First Nations activism today. Interviews and musical sequences describe how a tiny movement, the Native Brotherhood and Sisterhood, grew to become a successful voice for change across the country. Visually stunning, The Road Forward seamlessly connects past and present through superbly produced story-songs with soaring vocals, blues, rock, and traditional beats.

The score is strong and the tune "Indian Man" is rousing enough to transcend the film. Unfortunately, The Road Forward as a whole is far from cohesive.

Marie Clements' message is clear: art is a driving force behind reconciliation, in the same way The Native Voice circulated First Nations stories across the province-when all others cast a blind eye.

As a piece of Canadian history, this is already fascinating stuff.

The Road Forward offers an embarrassment of riches regarding the political, cultural, and day-to-day life of Canada's First Nations people, particularly in this region.
