A pale reboot of the mobster-biopic genre Wong helped make a cornerstone of Hong Kong cinema in the 1990s.

A sketchy, time-skipping script, some lame dialogue and too many thinly drawn characters take off some of the shine, but this is still an enjoyably polished production.

Donnie Yen and Andy Lau are the draw, and are worth the price of admission, though it's hard not to feel let down by the refusal to paint the protagonists in shades of grey

Chasing the Dragon is a bombastic failure as a throwback to 90's gangster films, as a Donnie Yen acting showcase and worse, as a Wong Jing exploitation film. The only thing the film ends up chasing down is its own tail.
