…held together by an infectious title song and a rousing Elmer Bernstein score, Honky Tonk Freeway…director John Schlesinger channels his Midnight Cowboy energy of rooting for the hopeless little guy, the results are offbeat but naturalistic and engaging.

One of the assets of the film is also the screenplay and how it tends to be this subversive satire on American life at the time (and today as well) and how it sticks it to religion and politics. And has the chutzpah to be both crude and sweet.
