The film hits the expected beats of the sports documentary pretty squarely. What makes it so compelling to watch is the choice of characters and the examination of what, beyond sporting glory, they are actually fighting for.

This is more interesting than documentaries about great big title fights.

This triumphant film is almost an advertisement for the incredible power the sport has in working-class communities.

... while the mechanics of Cradle of Champions are strong and the individuals involved are captivating, the documentary as a whole can be hard to engage in without proper foreknowledge.
