An overly familiar story of fathers and sons, of cycles of abandonment and years of pent-up resentments, without any fresh insight.

Wright's film is remarkably poignant. It's a nice, warm salve of a movie, a charming indie gem about the things in life you can't run away from and the giants you have to topple to become your own person.

I like to imagine that throughout the process of making any movie, everyone involved is fully convinced they're making a good movie. But with Walkaway Joe, I can't imagine that's possible.

... a well-intentioned glimpse into both the fragility and necessity of father-son relationships that's ultimately more predictable than profound.
