Storyline

In a futuristic New York known as New Rome, visionary architect Cesar Catilina dreams of building "Megalopolis," a utopian city that redefines society’s limits. Opposing him is the corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who clings to power and profit. Between them stands Julia, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar forces her to choose between loyalty, ambition, and the fate of humanity.

Critics consensus

“More of a creative manifesto than a cogent narrative feature, Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis is an overstuffed opus that's equal parts stimulating and slapdash.”

A bloated mess of philosophising and incomplete plotlines, made with such sincerity it becomes fascinatingly lovable.

It becomes conventionally digestible only when it occasionally turns into an old-fashioned love story.

I love the earnestness, sincerity, and ingenuity behind this... I can't say it's good, but I think people should see it -- and in IMAX to take in the enormity of it all.

I’m still not sure that what I saw was an actual film, or an expensive and overly-long proof of concept for a film.
