Yelling Fire in an Empty Theater

Tautly scripted and disarmingly funny, this debut feature keenly observes the inevitable letdown of post-grad life, slyly debunking myths and dumb expectations about “the greatest city in the world.”

There’s much to like here, including an abrupt ending that arrives literally out of nowhere. It’s a gambit bound to irk some viewers, but the... act merely crystallizes the low-grade fear and anxiety that has already permeated the rest of the picture.

Viewers, regardless of where they’re from, will be able to connect to it.

Cooper and Nicholson are great as those insects. Her Holly epitomizes the unearned confidence of a white woman living off rich parents so she never has to worry about whether "the money will come."
