Tran and Gladstone keep the movie watchable, mixing prickliness and warmth... They’re stuck, however, in a movie that can’t quite commit to either incisive relationship drama or comedy of manners.

When you’re remaking a film as good as Ang Lee’s 1993 romantic comedy,...the best you can hope for is a timely update that has its own tenor. Transposed from New York City to Seattle, Andrew Ahn’s film mostly achieves those benchmarks.

Despite differences in age, sexuality, gender, race and culture, these imperfect men and women must unite to make their situation work, and the film ends with a scene that is not just satisfying but quietly revolutionary.

It's worth watching for some of the performances and those genuinely moving scenes — but prepare for some frustration at what, in my opinion, could have been a far more nuanced story.
