Despite moments of visual flair, Jolie’s film gets bogged down by a series of lethargic, his-and-hers flashbacks.

[It is] a meditation on violence, grief, memory, trauma, and locating the line between justice and revenge.

Undeniably sincere yet dramatically moribund, the movie, filmed in Italy and written by Jolie and Baricco, delivers its condemnatory message with stultifying obviousness.

The film’s intentions are noble, but as dramaturgy it’s rudimentary and stultifying, with its twists and turns flattened out into something emotionally pat and hand-holdy.
