Critics consensus

“Gruesome and deliciously broad, Sam Raimi's Darkman bears the haunted soulfulness of gothic tragedy while packing the stylistic verve of onomatopoeia springing off a comic strip page.”

The picture escalates into absurdity and the last half hour, essentially a chase sequence, is marred by surprisingly cheesy special effects.

The pic supplies more than enough sick wit and visual sweep to make it well worth a look.

Neither the script, by five writers, nor the acting, by everyone, persuades.

Some of it's corny; some of it's unintentionally overwrought. But at least it's honest.
