The Jigsaw Man seems little more than an excuse to let Caine, George and Olivier exercise their craft while director Terence Young gets high on imitating Hitchcock.

Freed of the need to work at real characterization, Olivier and Caine, in their different ways, simply reach into their respective bags of actors' tricks and entertain us with style.

The star-studded cast... plays out its intricate story with such relish that the effect of all the confusion is not unlike that of an Agatha Christie story in which we can't wait for the final showdown.
