"A Better Tomorrow 2018" is a great action film that once again exemplifies the heroic bloodshed subgenre in the most impressive manner and a masterclass on how to shoot a remake.

Ding Sheng's remake of John Woo's 1986 classic encapsulates much that's wrong with contemporary mainstream cinema, both in China & abroad.

A Better Tomorrow 2018 is destined to wind up as a footnote to a stone cold classic, but this is nonetheless solid genre fare that stands on its own two feet, with both guns blazing.
