As The Book of Clarence builds to its denouement, the theme of faith – not treated with the rigour it deserves – drowns out Samuel’s sharper commentary, and the film’s vaulting genre-blending ambitions collapse into mess

The Book of Clarence stands on its own as a comedy-drama with engaging characters and an emotive narrative, but it’s probably best enjoyed by those vaguely familiar with the Bible, regardless of their beliefs.

Like the fake messiah at its centre, The Book of Clarence has rollicking, lively energy – but it’s hard to believe in.

It may not be based on of the four gospels, but it’s carving out its own story that may just be faithful enough to convert your atheist friend to believe in something greater than themselves.
